Silhouette — the cheeky takeover
The thong remains a steady wardrobe staple, but it is receding in relative dominance as the cheeky cut claims the season’s spotlight. Cheeky panties are up +9% in market adoption — a silhouette that reads as sexy without reading as purely functional. The direction is mid-coverage styles that look intentional if glimpsed, feeding directly into the underwear-as-outerwear macro. Strappy detailing on bikini and cheeky cuts is amplifying the effect, with searches up +97% year-over-year.

02
Color — the end of quiet luxury
The most decisive break from recent seasons is not toward any single color — it is a deliberate departure from the muted neutral palette that has defined underwear drawers for years. Jewel tones anchor the premium end; brights and neons lead at mass market. Butter yellow, cobalt, and hot pink are posting the strongest growth signals.

The core tension — comfort meets maximalist detail
The season’s most important dynamic: comfort and maximalist decoration are not competing trends. They operate on different axes of the garment. Comfort is a construction story — bonded edges, second-skin microfiber, nothing that digs. Decoration is a surface story — embroidery, ribbon ties, scalloped lace, contrast piping. A brief can be seamless at the leg and still carry a grosgrain bow at the waist.
Key insight
Maximalist detail is having its moment because brands finally have the fabrication technology to execute it without sacrificing wearability. Comfort unlocked the permission for decoration to return.
04
Fabric — second skin or nothing
Featherweight mesh, airy lace, breathable cotton blends, and satin that moves with the body define the fabric story. The goal is a barely-there sensation — seamless technology via ultra-thin microfiber and bonded edges eliminates visible panty lines entirely. 3D-knit constructions are gaining ground for their gentle stretch and absence of irritating seams.
05
The macro — underwear as outerwear
Running beneath all of the above: what was once strictly private is now designed to be glimpsed. Lace bralettes with tailored trousers, satin bandeaus under sheer blouses, corset tops with blazers. Panty choices are shifting toward styles that look intentional if seen — which reinforces both the cheeky silhouette and the maximalist detail trends simultaneously.

Retail implications
Five actionable priorities for buyers, merchandisers, and brand teams heading into the season.
Highest priority
Refresh colorways first
The lowest-effort, highest-impact move. New colorways in cobalt, butter yellow, and hot pink can land in time for summer at minimal cost.
Highest priority
Promote cheeky to hero
Cheeky should lead visual merchandising and paid creative. The thong stays in range but should no longer anchor visual merchandising. Let the silhouette shift show in every touchpoint.
Medium priority
Have a strappy cheeky
Strappy searches are up +97%. Most retailers have strappy thongs; far fewer have strappy cheekies. The intersection of both trends is an underfilled gap at almost every price point.
Medium priority
Merchandise detail as a story
Scalloped edges, ribbon ties, contrast piping, and picot trim exist across many ranges but are scattered across SKUs. Curating them into a summer whimsy edit creates perceived newness without new development.
Watch closely
Lean into outerwear styling
Content showing panties styled intentionally — visible waistbands, layered under sheer fabric — is outperforming standard flat-lay imagery.

What’s declining
- ↓ Underwired, rigid construction at any price point
- ↓ Quiet luxury neutrals — beige, ivory, greige as a default palette
- ↓ Plain, unadorned basics without at least one point of interest
- ↓ Thong as the default silhouette — it remains relevant but recedes relative to cheeky
